The body is adept at recovering from scratches and scrapes. However, if one suffers a serious illness, injury or undergoes surgery, the body is not able to cope as fast. With slower recovery, one is prone to further damage or recurrence of the issue at hand. Rehabilitation is the process of regaining one’s strength, familiarizing oneself with previous skills or learning how to do things in a different manner altogether.

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy or PT, is a rehabilitation specialty that focuses on mobility, strength, and fitness. It uses the theorems of mechanical force and movement to remedy impairments and also revive function and mobility on select body parts.

With a focus on addressing illnesses and injuries that limit one’s ability to move or function properly, management plans are devised based on a person’s history and latest physical examination. These plans often include manual therapy, exercises, the use of mechanical devices, or the introduction of physical agents like cold, heat, sound waves, electricity, radiation and many others.

Practitioners of PT are commonly called physical therapists or physiotherapists.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

This type of therapy is a rehabilitation specialty that focuses on helping an individual with their daily activities and recovery of their work skills. This type of rehabilitation is usually targeted to those who have mental, physical or cognitive handicaps and disorders.

Practitioners of PT are called occupational therapists and work with patients of all ages ranging from children to the elderly. They also work closely with other specialists such as physical therapists, nurses, social workers and speech therapists.

SPEECH LANGUAGE THERAPY

This rehabilitation specialty focuses on helping patients understand, speak, read, write and swallow. Contrary to common belief, speech therapy does not simply involve helping patients enunciate or stop stutters. Speech therapy actually covers a whole lot more such as:

  • Pragmatics – branch of linguistics covering social communication
  • Semantics – branch of linguistics covering word meanings
  • Syntax – branch of linguistics covering the principles of sentence construction or grammar
  • Literacy – reading and writing impairments related to phonics, semantics or comprehension
  • Cognition – memory and attention issues that would bring about communication issues

People who practice this are called speech therapists or speech and language therapists.

PAIN TREATMENT

Chronic pain affects millions all around the world. This interferes with one’s ability to perform daily tasks or participate in daily interactions. Pain treatment is commonly integrated in the 3 earlier rehabilitation specialties.

WHAT ARE BOLSTER ROLLS AND WEDGES?

A bolster is a daily living and mobility aid aimed to assist people who have trouble with positioning and seating. These objects are also perfect for those required to perform vestibular and coordination training and have to do rocking and rolling movements on a certain surface.

Rolls are typically cylinder in shape and are perfect for some application. In the same way, the wedge, with its unique 3D triangular shape, also has applications of its own. They are made of high compression foam and are covered with triple laminated vinyl fabric that is strong antibacterial, fire retardant, extremely durable and mildew resistant.

Further uses of bolster rolls and wedges include neurodevelopmental training, sport and classical massages, and also remedial gymnastics.
